New England Fall Foliage

September 28th - October 10th

Join us for a transcontinental journey to Boston by way of Chicago. Once in Boston, we will enjoy a comfortable bus tour of Northern New England in search of fall foliage. Nature, of course, needs to cooperate, but we will do our best to research the areas most likely to be experiencing color change.

Our itinerary will be as follows:

September 28 — We depart Los Angeles Union Station at 6:15 pm this evening. Our climb up Cajon Pass will be at twilight. Settle into your comfortable Pullman berth for a restful night's sleep. Wine and soft drinks will be served in the "Salisbury Beach" upon our departure.

September 29 — After a continental breakfast this morning, we will arrive in Albuquerque at mid-day for a service stop of about 25 minutes. This will be an opportunity to stretch your legs or shop for Indian jewelry or blankets from the vendors on the station platform. Lunch and dinner are available in the Amtrak diner. We will be crossing scenic Raton Pass this afternoon as we head for Colorado.

September 30 — After crossing Colorado and Kansas, we awake this morning in Missouri. Our arrival in Kansas City is scheduled for 7:30 am. In just a few hours we will cross the Mississippi River from Iowa into Illinois. Our arrival in Chicago today is scheduled for 3:15 pm. Typically, within an hour after our arrival the car will be taken to the Amtrak yard off Roosevelt Road and serviced. Since the process takes 2 – 3 hours, you may wish to visit the sights of Chicago during that time. Once serviced, the car will remain in the yard and be available for occupancy. Your luggage can remain on the car.

October 1 — After enjoying a continental breakfast, the day is yours to enjoy. There are many fine restaurants in the city, Navy Pier, and world-class museums to visit. Taxi and bus access from the yard is easy. Lunch and dinner are on your own. Our train leaves tonight at 9:30 pm for Boston.

October 2 — We awake in Pennsylvania. Our journey will continue today as we cross the states of New York and Massachusetts. The rolling countryside will be enjoyable as the miles slide by. The train will be switched in Albany-Rennselaer, NY in to separate trains for Boston and New York. Lunch and dinner will be in the Amtrak diner.

The train will be heading through the Berkshire Mountains as we travel to Boston. Splashes of autumn color are possible here at this time of year. Our arrival in Boston is scheduled for 9:10 pm. The car will need to be serviced in the Amtrak yard. You may remain on board or meet the car when it returns to South Station later that evening.

October 3 — Our car will be parked in South Station in Boston. It will be available to you during our visit. Today, we have arranged for a comfortable tour bus to take us north to other parts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire in search of color fall foliage. We cannot guarantee nature will cooperate, but we will do diligent research to find the most colorful spots in New England. Box lunches will be provided. Our return from our bus trip will be in the late afternoon – allowing time in the evening to find a restaurant of your choice.

October 4 — The day is free to tour Boston as you wish. Take an amphibious "Duck" tour, visit the USS Constitution or walk the Freedom Trail, for example. Our overnight train to Washington leaves at 9:30 pm.

October 5 — After a restful sleep, we arrive in Washington, DC at 7 am. A continental breakfast will be provided or you may wish to enjoy one of the coffee shops in Union Station. Today is yours to enjoy as you wish.

October 6 — The "Capitol Limited" leaves for Chicago at 4:05 pm so most of the day will be yours to continue visiting the many sights around Washington, DC. Dinner is in the Amtrak diner.

October 7 — Arrival in Chicago is at 8:45 am. The entire day and evening will be available for activities of your choice. The car will be serviced and available in the early afternoon. Lunch and dinner are on your own.

October 8 — We depart for Los Angeles on the "Southwest Chief" at 3 pm. We will travel through downstate Illinois, then into Missouri, arriving in Kansas City just after 10 pm. Dinner will be in the Amtrak diner.

October 9 — Our journey continues through Kansas and Colorado. The Rocky Mountains will be visible as we awake this morning. Our arrival in La Junta, Colorado will allow us to stretch our legs and take in the clear air. In the late afternoon we will arrive in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a service stop of about 45 minutes. The sellers of Indian jewelry and blankets will be offering their wares on the platform. When we depart Albuquerque, the sun will be setting on a desert landscape. We will arrive in Arizona before midnight. Lunch and dinner is in the Amtrak diner.

October 10 — Arrival in Los Angeles is at 8:15 am. The end of a transcontinental journey of many miles and many memories of an autumn to remember.
